Relief with a procuress on a baptismal font in Palencia (12th century)
Sculpted on the baptismal font of the Romanesque church of San Salvador, in Rebanal de las Llantas, Palencia, there is a couple copulating and an old woman behind the young woman, as well as another man. The other side of the font shows a scene of hell. Note the alcahueta's wardrobe and the echoes of the scene of the encounter between Pármeno and Areúsa with Celestina present.

The first image shows the lock of a house in Garganta la Olla, Extremadura (Spain), which is the lock of an old brothel or public house that is preserved in this town, located very close to Yuste, so it is believed that it was frequented by the guard of the monarch Carlos V. The second image shows a small statue of a woman at the door of the house. Note the detail of the chapines or heels of the two characters and the clear sexual symbolism of the lock.

After the encounter, Clytie, who was in love with Apollo, tells Leucothoe's father about the affair. He then buries the young woman and eventually Leucothoe turns into a sunflower.<br /><br />The image is reminiscent of the scene of Areúsa and Celestina. Since in this case Apollo is portrayed as both an old woman and a man who seduces the young woman, it is a curious case of a suitor and Celestina in a single character.<br /></span>

The image contains two scenes; the first image shows a carnival scene where elegantly dressed men and women appear with some of them wearing masks. In the second image, people appear in disguise and with instruments such as umbrellas or brooms. In the second image there is also an old woman with her head covered, reminiscent of Celestina sitting on a donkey looking backwards. This depiction of an old woman on a donkey looking backwards is reminiscent of the Inquisition's punishments to witches and celestinas.

Original title: <em>Una sopita</em> ("A little soup").<br /><br />The engraving shows an interior scene where four figures appear: two young people sitting talking, an old man sitting next to them watching them while he eats, and a young woman leaving the room. The engraving appears in the middle of a story titled "From window to window" ("<span>De ventana a ventana</span>") in which a Celestina appears. In this engraving there is no Celestina character but there is an old religious man who, due to his permissiveness and attitude towards the young lovers, clearly reminds of a Celestina.

Celestina telling a story to two children, by anonymous (1886)
In the drawing appears an old woman with her head covered, reminiscent of Celestina, talking to two children. From the word that appears in the image "Stories", the image can be interpreted as an old woman telling a story to two children. The gesture of enumerating with the fingers that the old woman makes corresponds to the old engravings of Celestina in the act of reasoning or enumerating and also the text that appears below the image alludes to Celestina:
"Uns tacanyos tenían convidats á casa, y 'l dinar que 'ls servían era molt magre.
Entre 'ls convidats s' hi contava una senyoreta, que destrossava sense pietat la reputaciò de totas las sèvas conegudas.
- Pero ¡valgam Dèu! ¡y qu' es murmuradora aquesta Celestina! va dirli la senyora de la casa.
- Que s' hi ha de fer, respongué la interpelada. Bè haig d' entretenir las dents ab una cosa ó altra. Per no morirme de fam me menjo á las amigas."
("Some stingy people had guests at home, and the lunch they were serving was very sparse.
Among the guests was a young lady, who mercilessly destroyed the reputation of all her acquaintances.

<span>In the image appears an old woman reminiscent of Celestina with her head covered, holding a club and what looks like a rosary hanging from her hip. On the left is a human body with the head of a donkey and a guitar on his shoulder. On the donkey's head one can read "Carnival". By the title of the image (Carnaval y quaresma, "Carnival and Lent") it is understood that the donkey represents carnival and the woman represents Lent. The image recalls the tradition of Mr Carnival and Mrs Lent from <em>The Book of Good Love</em>. In the first image, which is a fragment of the comic strip, you can see an old woman and in the description she is referred to as Celestina. Celestinas in a 19th century comic magazine, by El Fandango (1891)
Various representations of Celestinas or celestinesque characters in the weekly magazine "El Fandango: Weekly dance dedicated to the beautiful male sex" (1891). We can see the figures that remind of Celestina as old women, with their heads covered following the Celestina tradition. Many of these figures appear either with a young prostitute or with a couple where the young man acts as a client, the young woman as a prostitute, and the old woman as a procuress.<br /><br />Text on the first image:<br />"He. - Lovely woman<br />of complete qualities<br />She must be a lady...<br />-She's worth five pesetas!<br />says the companion."

"The academic culture of the Spanish 19th century introduced the concept of decency in the representation of the female nude. During the Restoration, the images of women who, due to economic necessity, were forced to pose naked for the artists proliferated and these, in return, consciously hid their faces to preserve their dignity. In this work, the model hides her nudity with a dramatic gesture. The despondency is underlined by the presence of an older woman of humble extraction who seems to remind her of her situation of need. The painter assigns to the fabrics that cover the model a prominence comparable to that of her body, which seems to be ironic about the consideration of objects that both the cloths and the nudes had in the artists' academic training." In the image appear four young women dressed in regional dresses and mantillas. They are in a field surrounded by men and women walking and in horse carts and next to the women there is also a dog. On the left is an old woman sitting on the ground with her head covered, reminiscent of Celestina. The aesthetic of the painting is reminiscent of Goya's work.

La Celestina corrupts Barcelona, political joke, by Picarol (1906)
Three figures appear in the drawing, a man with a mustache and elegant clothing, a young woman and an old woman with a mustache and her head covered. The young woman represents the city of Barcelona, the old woman represents the procuress Celestina and the man represents the Banco Hispano Colonial ("Colonial Hispanic Bank"). The procuress is trying to corrupt the young woman so that she goes with the man for his money, as a manner to criticize the political context of the time between the Banco Hispano Colonial and the city of Barcelona. The dialogue between Celestina and Barcelona is as follows (translated):
"LA CELESTINA.- Give in, put on a good face; look that he's rich and is convenient for you...
BARCELONA.- He is useless; I prefer honor to all of his money."

The image was published in the foreign humor section of the magazine, so the clothing of the characters does not seem to be Spanish from that time. The cover does not appear to be directly related to the Celestina tradition.

Commemoration of the 500 years since the publication of the work. On this ONCE ticket, the print from the Toledo edition has been subtly altered: the image has been cut to include the first two lines of text, in which the words 'Tragicomedia de Calisto y Melibea' appear. The gothic font, along with the use of the drop cap for the initial T in 'Tragicomedia', do not allow these two lines to function as text, rather as part of the image. It was necessary to reach the dreamy lattice where she awaited the arrival of her lover. Celestina facilitated the encounter of two in-love souls and Melibea open her arms to receive Calisto in the shadows of her bedroom."

Blue monochromatic fragment of the painting <em>Patronage of the Arts by the House of Habsburg</em> (Patronazgo de las artes por la casa de Habsburgo), by Julius Victor Berger (Kunsthistorisches Museum of Vienna). The seated young woman is Isabella of Portugal. Amaranta Saguar writes about this card and the painting:
<p>Christmas season is a time for feasting and, as such, I find it appropriate to write about the restaurant called <em>La Celestina</em> in Madrid. Obviously, I am not interested in its homemade traditional food, but on its choice of name and, above all, on its choice of image for its card.</p>
<p>Instead of using any of the available <em>Celestina</em>‘s illustrations, the picture on the card corresponds to a detail in the 1891 painting “Patronage of the Arts by the House of Habsburg” by Julius Victor Berger (Kunsthistorisches Museum of Vienna). In it, the empress reads a document, presumably a letter, which a servant lady (?) also reads over her shoulder.</p>

<p>The interesting bit about this choice of image is that, deprived from its context, Isabella of Portugal is irremediably identified with Melibea and the servant lady is identified with the go-between, although there is no letter reading scene in <em>Celestina</em>. In my opinion, this is only possible because both figures correspond to the traditional mental image of a fifteenth century lady and of a fifteenth century older woman. However, this does not fully explain why this was the image chosen for the card. Were there not enough fifteenth and sixteenth century portraits to have to resort to a nineteenth century painting? Not enough illustrated editions of <em>Celestina</em>?</p>
<p>It would be worth asking the owners of the restaurant.
