Gauguin, Paul (1848-1903)

1892

Description

The painting represents a naked young woman lying on a bed and an older woman appears in the background. The figure in the background is not a procuress but a ghost or the spirit of death. However, the painting connects with the famous Olympia painting in which there is a maid who, without being a procuress, follows a tradition of a naked young woman and a procuress.

The second image is a page from the artist's Noa Noa notebook. Note that the theme of a mysterious female character is repeated in other of his images of Tahiti and is sometimes reminiscent of procuress painted in Europe at the time.
