Title

Engraving of act IX from the Burgos edition (1499)

Creator

Fadrique de Basilea and anonymous engraver.

Date

1499

Description

Double engraving: Banquet scene in Celestina's house. Left: Lucrecia who arrives at the door and Celestina who goes out to see her, uniting the two spaces. Right: Sempronio, Elicia, Areúsa and Pármeno are in the interior all standing, not at the table as with subsequent editions. Note the high belt of Areúsa's dress, which appears to suggest a pregnant woman.

Relation

Three cases are presented in which the influence of Christian iconography can be seen in the engravings of some early editions of LC: the Visitatio Mariae to her cousin Isabel as a model of the two illustrations of the CCM from Burgos (1499); Judas' characteristics are revealed in the representation of the old procuress in the engravings from the same edition; and, finally, the presence of elements associated with the negations of Saint Peter in the xilography of the execution of the two servants in the Sevilla edition from 1518.
